ESS Foundation Supports the Southwest with $25,000 Donation to West-MEC

The ESS Foundation, the employee-owner-led nonprofit of ESS Companies (ESSC), made its first-ever donation in the Southwest region. The $25,000 donation will support the efforts of West-MEC (Western Maricopa Education Center), a public career and technical education district serving high school students across western Maricopa County, Arizona.

This isn’t just a big check presentation or photo op. It’s a powerful contribution to the future of the construction industry and an investment in the next generation. The donation will help West-MEC continue its mission of providing students with hands-on training and certifications.

“We are deeply grateful for the generous donation from the ESS Foundation and their support of West-MEC. This contribution reflects our shared commitment to developing a highly skilled workforce and expanding access for students to earn industry-recognized certifications at no cost,” said Dr. Scott Spurgeon, West-MEC Superintendent. “We sincerely appreciate their partnership and dedication to supporting our students’ futures and advancing the construction industry.”

This milestone was made possible thanks to the guidance of ESSC’s two Arizona-based companies, Achen-Gardner Construction and Rummel Construction, who played a key role in identifying West-MEC as a high-impact partner aligned with the ESS Foundation’s mission. These Southwest brands have committed to actively supporting West-MEC programs with a hands-on approach to participating in events and initiatives.

The check presentation event brought together leaders from ESS Foundation, West-MEC, and ESSC to celebrate the partnership and its potential to shape the future of the industry.

“As employee-owners, we know the value of investing in people. Supporting West-MEC helps us grow the next generation who will carry that same pride and ownership forward,” said Vanessa Andersen, Executive Vice President of Rummel.

Dan Spitza, President of Achen-Gardner, added, “They’re doing incredible work for Arizona’s youth and workforce. Achen-Gardner is excited about the opportunities this new partnership will allow ESS Companies to help shape the future workforce here in the valley.”

The ESS Foundation was created to break the barrier to entry and provide opportunities for the next generation of industry professionals. Through scholarships, school donations, and community partnerships, the ESS Foundation is helping students discover careers in construction.

“We’re proud to support West-MEC’s incredible work and help build pathways into construction careers in the Southwest and beyond,” said Tim Paulson, President of the ESS Foundation.
