ESS Foundation Awards Multi-Year Grant to Stephens College Women in Trades Program
The ESS Foundation is proud to support the Stephens College Women in Trades program with grants of $15,000 in 2026 and an additional $15,000 in 2027. The program provides pre-apprenticeship training to prepare students for full apprenticeship opportunities within their chosen trade fields.
“As a matching partner for our FHWA Highway Construction Training Program grant, this investment directly strengthens our ability to provide hands-on training, industry connections, and workforce pathways that lead to sustainable, high-demand careers for our students, ” said Dr. Scott Taylor, Stephens College. “The ESS Foundation’s commitment to workforce development is making a meaningful impact not only on our students, but on the future of the construction industry itself.”
The donation helps Stephens College expand opportunities for women pursuing careers in the skilled trades and heavy highway construction. Current participants include local Douglas High School students, with Stephens providing transportation to and from the program to ensure access and participation. The program sees a strong enrollment demand, and support like this helps ensure its continued growth and expansion.
The ESS Foundation continues to invest in workforce development initiatives that prepare future construction leaders and help build a stronger skilled trades workforce. “It’s an honor to present this grant and support the incredible work happening at Stephens College,” said Tim Paulson, ESS Foundation President. “The Women in Trades program changes lives by creating pathways into meaningful, well-paying careers in the construction trades.”
The Women in Trades program equips students with hands-on experience, industry exposure, and the skills needed to succeed in the field. Removing common barriers to entry, the program provides transportation assistance, childcare support, PPE, workwear, and stipends. This helps participants gain the training needed to transition into Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship programs and careers in the skilled trades.
“Supporting this effort alongside Stephens College to prepare women for careers in the trades is crucial to meeting the daily demand for highly skilled workers,” said Ed Scavone, ESS Foundation Board Member. “A thriving economy is impossible without well-trained people ready and willing to jump into every type of job.”
The partnership exemplifies a shared commitment to expanding workforce participation within the construction industry.
“This partnership really reflects what the ESS Foundation is all about, creating opportunities, helping grow the construction workforce, and opening more doors for women in the skilled trades.” Angie Regan, ESS Foundation Board Member.
As demand for skilled workers increases, partnerships like this strengthen the construction workforce of tomorrow. The ESS Foundation remains committed to advancing programs that help build a stronger workforce.
